Today, younger generations–TikTok connoisseurs and idolizers of aesthetics–have been loving and bringing back all things Y2K. But there are a few key trends that defined Y2K fashion they haven’t quite nailed: the whale tails that graced the tops of low-rise jeans, taffeta everything, cultural appropriation and trucker hats that made us question our life choices. Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit the good, the bad, and the highly questionable of 2000s fashion.
16. Belly Chains & chain belts
Designed to draw attention to the hips and the low-rise waistlines that defined the era, chain belts with dangling charms were a Y2K staple. Function? Zero. Aesthetic? 10/10.

15. Newsboy caps
Few accessories defined the early 2000s quite like the newsboy cap. With an unmatched chokehold on celebrity style, no look of the era felt complete without it.

14. The Layered Flipped-Out Bob
No haircut carried the cultural weight of the 2000s like the choppy layered bob—universally desired by every girl… and her mom.

13. Animal Print Pants
Animal print exploded in the early 2000s. Shiny, metallic animal skin pants were peak fashion, channeling the era’s obsession with bold, synthetic glam.

12. Juicy Couture Velour Tracksuits
The Y2K uniform and basically a down payment on popularity–worn by everyone from Britney Spears to Paris Hilton.

11. Every element of this Britney Spears Outfit
During … Britney Spears stepped out in an excessively long fur-trimmed coat, embroidered jeans, tinted glasses, a graphic Madonna baby tee, a visible belly-button ring, baguette bag, beanie and snakeskin boots. It was a dramatic, excessive combination that perfectly captured the maximalist spirit of the early 2000s.

10. Von Dutch Trucker Hats
The Von Dutch trucker hats turned gas station gear into high fashion–sealed with the approval of Y2K fashion icons like Paris Hilton, Gwen Stefani and Britney Spears. Trashy or iconic? You decide.

9. Denim Jackets & lace-Up Pants
Two Y2K staples that thrived on excess: the endlessly bedazzled, patched, or fur-trimmed denim jacket, and denim lace-front pants.
If the denim-on-denim look wasn’t enough, the 2000s saw a major obsession with lace up pants and jeans. In fact, pants were an important part of a 2000s outfit and were often embroidered or bejeweled. No part of an outfit was to be a bore in the 2000s, and pants were no exception, they were just another canvas. A defining aspect of Y2K fashion. Together, they embodied the era’s bold—and slightly questionable—approach to style.

8. This Exact Skirt
The quintessential tiered boho skirt of the Y2K era. Paired with Uggs or flip-flops, they channeled a Free People–meets–Claire’s aesthetic that defined the decade.
Britney Spears pairs the infamous sequin tiered skirt with UGG boots and a graphic tee for a very Y2K look.
7. The Whale Tail
In an era where the lower the jeans, the better, the whale tail became the ultimate badge of honor–peeking just enough to prove your low-rise game was on point.

6. The Tramp Stamp
Once peak rebellion and femininity, later mocked it into oblivion. But nothing says Y2K quite like a butterfly or bow inked forever where low-rise jeans could show it off.

4. EAST ASIAN INSPIRED DRESSES
Silk ‘Oriental’ dresses were a Y2K staple, borrowed from traditional qipao designs. Once seen as chic, today a cultural appropriation debate waiting to happen.

2. Taffeta
Satin in hot pinks and oranges dominated Y2K looks. Shiny, clingy, and staticky, it was like wearing a glamorous sleeping bag.

1. FEDORAS
Paired with vests, low-rise jeans, and oversized belts–fedoras at the time signaled edgy sophistication. Today, they’re remembered as the hat that launched a thousand fashion regrets.
